How to design a custom mouse pad with Levely

Ferdi Servaas

Having a custom mouse pad made is a simple way to personalize your desk. Use your own illustration, a photo that makes you happy, artwork in the colors of your setup, or a logo for your team or company. You don't have to be a graphic designer to do this: in the online design tool, you can see how your image will look on the mouse pad while you are creating it.

A beautiful end result does start with a few smart choices. Which size fits your desk? Is your image sharp enough? And which parts of the design will remain visible under your keyboard? In this guide, we walk through the entire process step by step.

Short answer: first choose your size, open the design tool, upload your image, place important details well within the edges, and check the preview. Levely will double-check your file before production begins.

1. Choose the size that fits your desk

Levely has three sizes. Before designing, measure the free surface of your desk. Also, keep in mind monitor stands, speakers, laptop stands, and cable ports.

SizeDimensionsBest for
S30 × 25 cmA compact desk, space only under the mouse, or a portable workstation
XL80 × 30 cmA shallower desk where the keyboard and mouse need to lie together on the mat
XXL90 × 40 cmA spacious gaming or work setup and plenty of freedom of movement for the mouse

The S Custom gaming mouse pad is the practical choice if you only want a surface for the mouse. With the XL Custom gaming mouse pad, you create a wide workspace without using much desk depth. The XXL Custom gaming mouse pad provides the most space and makes a design stand out the most.

Not sure which size to choose? Mark out the dimensions on your desk with masking tape to see how much space remains.

2. Choose a suitable image

Photos, digital illustrations, patterns, and logos can all work well. The best choice depends mainly on the aspect ratio. A phone photo is often portrait, while an XL or XXL mouse pad is very wide. You will have to crop such a photo significantly. For a large format, preferably choose a landscape image or a design that can extend to the edges.

Pay attention to these points when choosing:

  • Use the largest and sharpest source file possible.
  • Preferably choose a landscape image for XL and XXL.
  • Avoid screenshots and images that have been heavily compressed by chat apps.
  • Do not place small text and logos against the edge.
  • Check that you have permission to use the image and any characters, brands, or artwork.

For a print file, Levely recommends at least 150 DPI. If you are working in a design program yourself, add 10 mm of bleed around the edges. For an XXL mat of 90 × 40 cm, the working file becomes 92 × 42 cm as a result. Keep important elements at least 10 mm from the final size and use text of at least 10 pt.

3. Open the design tool and upload your file

Go to the custom mouse pads collection, choose S, XL, or XXL, and start the design tool via the button on the product page. Then upload your image. In the tool, you can scale, shift, and combine the image with other elements. For example, you can use a background, a logo, and text in one design.

Fill the entire printable area. If a background stops just before the edge, an unwanted light strip might appear after cutting. Therefore, let a photo, color block, or pattern extend past the outer edge. Conversely, keep faces, text, logos, and other important details slightly further inward.

4. Make your design suitable for daily use

A design might look great on screen but partially disappear on your desk. Therefore, imagine a keyboard and mouse on the preview. A centered logo often ends up under the keyboard in a large format. Instead, place an important detail to the left, to the right, or in a corner that remains clear.

Contrast also plays a role. Dark mice and keyboards stand out clearly on a lighter mat; light accessories stand out against deep colors. If you want a calm workspace, choose a limited color palette or a subtle pattern. For an expressive gaming setup, the image can have more contrast and color.

Using text? Keep it short and large enough. Very thin lines and tiny letters are less clear on fabric than on a screen. For production, Levely recommends lines of at least 0.5 pt and text of at least 10 pt.

5. Check the preview and order

Before ordering, look at all edges and corners. Then check three things:

  1. Is the entire area filled?
  2. Are faces, logos, and text safely within the borders?
  3. Are the most important parts visible when the keyboard and mouse are on the mat?

You can then add the design to your shopping cart and order. Personalized products are made especially for you and therefore cannot be returned, unless there is a production error, damage, or incorrect delivery. So, take a moment for the final check.

Levely checks the design before production. If the image is too blurry or technically unsuitable, the team will contact you. On average, the mouse pad will be on your desk within 2 to 5 working days, and you will receive a tracking link after shipping.

What exactly do you get?

The custom mouse pads are 3 mm thick and have a non-slip base made of natural rubber, a microfiber surface, and stitched edges. The surface is made for a combination of smooth mouse movements and control. You can easily wipe off light spills. The mouse pads are made to order in the Netherlands.

Design it yourself or ask for help?

You can usually place your own photo or existing artwork directly in the tool. Do you only have an idea, separate images, or a logo, but not a complete design? Then contact Levely. Our design team can help turn your idea into a print-ready layout.

For companies, teams, and events, there is a separate business ordering route. This includes file checking, a free digital mock-up, and volume discounts for larger quantities. There is no minimum order requirement.

Frequently asked questions about having a custom mouse pad made

What resolution should my image have?

Preferably use a sharp source file of at least 150 DPI at the final size. A large image in pixels provides more room for adjustment than a small screenshot. If in doubt, Levely will check your file before production.

Can I add multiple images and text?

Yes. In the design tool, you can upload, scale, and combine multiple elements. Keep the overall look calm and do not place important details too close to the edge.

How long does delivery take?

On average, your custom mouse pad will be on your desk within 2 to 5 working days. As soon as the order has been shipped, you will receive a Track & Trace link.

Is a custom mouse pad washable?

Preferably clean the mat with a slightly damp cloth and optionally a small amount of mild detergent. Do not use a washing machine; it can unnecessarily strain the material, edges, and print.

Can I return a personalized mouse pad?

Because the mat is made especially for you, a personalized product cannot normally be returned. In the event of a production error, damage, or incorrect delivery, Levely will of course seek a suitable solution.

Can I have a logo printed for my company?

Yes. You can order from as little as one piece. For teams, promotional gifts, and larger quantities, you can request a non-binding business quote and a free mock-up.
